Cardiocheck

Cardiocheck is a device that clips onto the fingertip and checks the age of your arteries.

It fires an infrared beam into the blood vessels of the finger and compares the main pulse with the reflected pulse to assess the health of all the major arteries. It measures arterial stiffness and vascular tone, these now being established as the main cardiovascular disease risks.

The key statistics given are the Stiffness Index (SI) and the Reflection Index (RI) and the device also gives an estimated vascular age and measures heart rate.

If your arterial age is higher than your body age you must start implementing lifestyle and dietary changes to help reduce the SI and RI.

A high SI = stiff arteries – lost their elasticity.

RI = vascular tone and measures the condition of the artery wall.

Indicating inflammation associated with early signs of atherosclerosis.

It is only when arteries become diseased or inflamed and try to repair the damage that cholesterol is used in the latter stages, clinging to the weakened area of the arterial wall. It is important to see the early signs before plaque – a mixture of calcium, heavy metals and other substances can build up and lead to heart disease or stroke.

The build up of plaque is indicated by free radicals in the arterial wall. They mutate the DNA of arterial cells and the growth expands, stretching the lining of the arterial wall.

The blood lays down fibrin to patch the tear in the wall and then debris circulating in the blood becomes trapped in the patch.

Women are twice as likely to die from heart disease than cancer, 1:5 men and 1:6 women die of heart disease. However it is not only the heart at risk. Other organs including the brain and kidneys can be harmed if they do not get an uninterrupted supply of nutrients and oxygen.

Stiffened arteries prevents the blood flowing around the body as it should. It means the heart has to work harder to get the blood around the body which puts it under strain.

How to keep your arteries youthful and supple:

1. Diet

a) Good food – fruit and vegetables (organic where possible

* Good oils

* Small amounts of fish, organic chicken

* No coffee, chocolate, tea, refined foods, sugar, red meat, dairy foods or alcohol

b) Supplements Omega 3

* L-Arginine – Argenix

2. Smoking

* No smoking

3. Water

* Good, mineral water – at least 1 litre per day

4. Exercise

1 hour of cardiovascular exercise three times per week to help oxygenate the cells and build up the muscles.

5. Reduce stress levels and develop positive mental attitude

* Meditation

* Visualisation

Or if you would rather – you should give yourself half an hour a day relaxing completely listening to quiet music.

The heart is the centre of love and security, so it is important to have a very positive outlook and enjoy life.

6. Breathing

None of us breathe right down in the lower part of our lungs and it is important to do so because the lower lobes are larger and are therefore able to oxygenate more cells.

Try diaphragmatic breathing, so that as you breathe in your upper abdomen expands and comes out, as you breath out it sinks in.

* Breathe in for 4 counts

* Hold for 20 counts

* Breathe out for 10 counts
