What is it?
The Alexander Technique is a practical method of self-help through which we can learn to become aware of, and avoid, harmful responses to the stress of daily life; these responses manifest themselves most noticeably in habits of undue strain, tension and agitation.
How does it work?
The Alexander Technique teaches that use affects functioning. If we misuse ourselves by, for example, acting rashly without thought, stiffening our neck muscles, disturbing the natural balance of the head, hunching our shoulders, holding our breath, collapsing, or holding ourselves in a straitjacket of tension, then our general functioning and well-being will inevitably deteriorate.
By learning how to prevent or unlearn these harmful patterns of misuse, we can restore the natural poise most of us enjoyed as young children; other common benefits include improved breathing, co-ordination and clarity of thought, and the ability to go about our daily activities feeling calmer, with less of a sense of strain and effort.
How is it taught?
The Alexander Technique is taught in one-to-one lessons that last about 45 minutes. The teacher uses gentle touch and verbal instruction to guide you through simple activities, such as sitting, standing and lying down, and to enable you to discover how you are misusing yourself. After a lesson people typically report feeling lighter, freer, more relaxed and alert.
