Protandim

Protandim Nrf1 Synergizer is a break through in nutrigenomics, the effects of food and food constituents on gene expression, and in the fight against aging that uses ingredients to harness the energy of youth in the mitochondria.

With age comes wisdom and maturity but you also get all the wrinkles, more aches and pains, and overall lack of energy. Getting old isn’t easy. However we’re now able to fight the signs of aging at the cellular level, right where aging occurs.

Absolutely everything that happens in your body, every muscle contraction, biochemical cascade, cellular regeneration, detoxification and much, much, more requires energy and this energy comes from the mitochondria.

Mitochondria also have other very important functions, such as acting as the coordinator for apoptosis, or programmed cell death. This process ensures that malfunctioning, damaged cells are cleaned out before they multiply and turn into tumours. If the mitochondria are damaged themselves or dysfunctional, they may not be able to give the signal for apoptosis when it is supposed to happen, or if they are able, but there is not enough energy being produced for the signal, then the defective cells will survive and multiply and can end up as cancer.

Mitochondria produce up to 95% of the energy your body uses, but those muscular, microscopic powerhouses break down as you age, it’s a natural part of oxidative stress. Fewer mitochondria don’t just mean less energy, mitochondria also produce Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the source of cellular energy that pumps our heart, supports muscle growth and maintains healthy brain function.

It is the massive prevalence of processed unnatural foods, and excessive amounts of added sugars, carbohydrates and industrial fats that cause the majority of damage. High-carb, processed food diets prevent the body from efficiently burning fat as its primary fuel, which is far more efficient, inducing less oxidative stress than burning carbohydrates. So it is really important to eat the right fuel to optimise your mitochondrial health.

Consumed calories are converted to electrons that head for a unique part in the cell where they are enzymatically reactive with oxygen to create water. However if the electrons spill out before they reach that part of the cell, they can prematurely react with oxygen creating a free radical called superoxide in the immediate proximity of the mitochondrial DNA that is particularly susceptible to damage. So any time those free radicals are generated you can have damage to the DNA in the mitochondria, that then cannot produce the proteins it codes for and everything starts to fall apart!

This leads to oxidative stress and a breakdown of your health at a cellular level. So one of the most crucial keys to slowing the harmful effects of aging and restoring a youthful feeling to your body is to keep the mitochondria healthy and in good working order and therefore fight the signs of ageing at the cellular level.

How do we produce new, more powerful mitochondria, and feel younger and more energetic from the inside out? There’s a new breakthrough in nutrigenomics that wakes up your body’s ability to boost mitochondria production, protect the ones you have and restore youth to your body at the cellular level. Two great products, they are called Protandim NRF1 Synergizer, combined with the Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer.

NRF1 Synergizer works on the cellular level to:

• Increase cellular energy (ATP)
• Improve performance through energy production
• Enhance cellular health so that cells function at their peak performance
• Improve sleep quality and promote cellular repair
• Boost mitochondria production and their ability to network
• Slow cellular aging by supporting chromosome integrity

The contents of Nrf1 include Rhodiola Rosea (root) Extract, Co Enzyme Q10, Grape extract, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Quercetin.

Rhodiola Rosea (root) is a plant from the Himalayas which contains bioactives that stimulate NRF1 and mitochondrial biogenesis and helps protect the endothelial cells from oxidative damage. It also actively stimulates ATP synthesis or re-synthesis in muscles during exercise. It is known to increase resistance to fatigue.

CoEnzymeQ10 (CoQ10) and the reduced version Ubiquinol play an important role in helping to produce the biological energy needed by your cells for life, repair and regeneration. It is made in the body and resides primarily in mitochondria where it plays a key role in transporting electrons so ATP is made. So ingesting CoQ10 has 2 benefits, the first is it is already made so it helps compensate when the aging body makes less of it, and the second is that it carries electrons towards their final destination, the making of ATP.
It’s a fat-soluble antioxidant, meaning it works in the fat portions of your body, such as your cell membranes, where it helps protect your mitochondrial membranes from oxidative damage.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is made in the body and helps to turn glucose into energy that the cell can use. ALA is able to neutralise free radicals and because it is both fat and water soluble, it can protect all parts of the cell (including the mitochondria) from these free radicals.

Grape Extract is made from the whole grape (seeds, pulp and skin) and contains powerful natural polyphenols (flavanols) known to have anti-aging capabilities. The bioactives help activate the NRF1 protein and other anti-aging pathways.

Quercetin is a naturally occurring antioxidant, a flavonoid that is abundant in various fruits and vegetables. It is a NRF1 activator that promotes mitochondria biogenesis and helps prevent mitochondrial decay. Quercetin contains polyphenols that help to protect the mitochondria and their function that supports ATP synthesis.

Nrf2 synergizer is a powerful protein that is latent within each cell in the body. It sends information to the cell’s DNA telling the cells of the body to produce antioxidant enzymes to protect themselves from free radical damage known as oxidative stress. However it is unable to move or operate until it is released by an Nrf2 activator. This activation can become disrupted as one ages, or if the body is overcome by malfunction and disease resulting in further cellular damage. This damage is known as oxidative stress and is accompanied by free radical production. Oxidative stress and the associated free radical damage contribute to the progression of hundreds of diseases and aging symptoms.

Direct antioxidants such as vitamin C, Vitamin E, berries and juices have typically been used to neutralise free radicals and to prevent the damage they cause. One molecule of antioxidants from these sources neutralises one free radical, i.e. they combat free radicals on a one to one ratio. This can be very effective, however there comes a tipping point where the direct antioxidants are inadequate to take care of the damage.

A better approach to fighting free radicals is to use the body’s own self defense mechanism. When Nrf2 is activated in the nucleus, it turns on the production of antioxidant enzymes such as Catalase, Glutathione and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). These antioxidant enzymes are powerful enough to neutralise up to one million free radicals every second. This one to one million ratio proves to be a far more effective approach in combating aging and disease.

Since the Nrf2 protein remains dormant in a cell until it is activated by an Nrf2 activator, we need to determine what activates Nrf2 to take advantage of the one to one million free radical neutralisation.

Through the study of Nutrigenomics, it has been determined that a variety of foods are powerful activators of the Nrf2 pathway.

Dr David Perimutter M.D. Huffington Post 25.1.11 said “While not necessarily rich in antioxidants, they directly and dramatically amplify our innate ability to produce vast antioxidant protection by signaling our DNA. In this way, specific molecules from Nrf2 activating foods can trigger the production of thousands of antioxidant molecules, providing far better protection against the brain-damaging effects of free radicals compared to standard antioxidant supplements.”

The contents of Nrf2 include becopa, milkthistle, green tea, turmeric and ashwagandha. They have been put together in a synergistic way so that each herb enhances the others to work even more efficiently. They activate Nrf2 that signals the genes in the nucleus of the cell to increase production of many antioxidant proteins or enzymes.

Protandim therefore protects DNA and important cellular components against free radical damage, it protects tissues and organs against destructive inflammatory processes and it protect tissues and organs from abnormal fibrotic build-up.

Milk Thistle has been recognised for many centuries as a ‘liver tonic’ and has been reported to have protective effects on the liver and to greatly improve its function. It also lowers cholesterol levels and reduces the damaging effects of chemotherapeutic drugs on the liver.

Ashwagandha is most well known for its restorative benefits and its rejuvenating properties Ashwagandha contains many useful medicinal chemicals, including with anolides, alkaloids, choline, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars.

Bacopa extract has been used for centuries to restore and nourish the central nervous system. Properties found in the extract are known to increase mental functions within the brain. Bacopa contains antioxidants that are thought to protect brain cells, making them stronger and healthier. In fact, the extract is commonly used to enhance memory and concentration, thus improving learning comprehension and processing skills.

These antioxidants can also reduce the effects of stress on the brain. As a result, bacopa extract can be used to calm the nerves. It works especially well for alleviating symptoms associated with nervous exhaustion and anxiety. The herb also increases serotonin levels, which promote relaxation. This can help alleviate problematic headaches.

Green Tea reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols that can neutralise free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Turmeric has been used for centuries in medicine, the active ingredient being curcumin. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions.

For me, this is one of the best natural products to take for reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Our bodies have to put up with so much in the way of toxins from the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and even the cosmetics that we use, that it is struggling to remove them. If we can increase our antioxidant activity by one to one million free radicals then surely it is worth it. There have been many peer-reviewed studies to show that it reduces oxidation by 40% in 30 days.
